SU offers new master’s degree in EdTech

By Kean Andrei Bagaipo

Silliman University (SU) opened its newest program, the Master of Arts in Education Major in Educational Technology (MAEd-EdTech), to equip students with the skills needed in technology-oriented teaching and learning.

The program was formed through the initiative of SU Dr. Mariano Lao Global Studies Center (GSC), in collaboration with the College of Education and the University Graduate Programs.

GSC Director Dr. Dave Marcial said that the new course is part of the university’s commitment to “innovation and adaptability” in response to the changing educational landscape.

“This program is one of SU’s strategic actions to offer innovative and relevant programs that address the current demands of technological advancements,” he added.

It was introduced last year as SU’s first Online Distance Education Program which embraces advancements in education, meets the post-pandemic learning needs, and fulfills the demands of the digital age.

Course modalities

Effective this school year, MAEd-EdTech will be fully delivered online, employing synchronous and asynchronous modalities with micro-learning strategies.

The program will utilize mySOUL, SU’s official learning management system, while synchronous sessions will be delivered via Zoom platform.

According to the GSC guidelines, these modalities will provide students with the flexibility to engage in distance learning while mastering essential skills for effective technology integration in education.

“Students can earn their degree while staying with their families or in the comfort of their homes,” Marcial said.

However, he pointed out that students may miss in-person and on-campus experiences during the online learning course.

Graduate outcomes and applications

Under the MAEd program, students must complete a total of 36 units spread out in 10 courses, each with 3 units, and a 6-unit thesis.

EdTech students will gain proficiency in incorporating technology into various domains of educational settings such as curriculum development, pedagogy, classroom management, assessment, instructional design and development, as well as ethical and legal considerations.

In its guidelines, interested applicants must hold a valid teaching license granted by the government, a bachelor of science degree in education or related field, or a non-education undergraduate degree with a minimum of 18 credit units.

Pre-admission requirements include accomplishing the Graduate Programs Application Form and Reference Form, submission of a thesis concept essay, and scanned transcript of records.

Online registration of accepted applicants will begin from Jan. 13 to 17 while classes start on Jan. 20, 2025

Implementation process

Marcial further explained that the new program underwent the required consultations with the SU Curriculum Committee, Deans’ Conference, Academic Council, and the SU Board of Trustees.

A feasibility study was also conducted as a standard requirement of the SU Curriculum Committee.

He added that the program adheres to the established university guidelines to ensure a “seamless transition and implementation ensuring quality.”

“We look forward to offering more programs through online distance education, expanding opportunities for learners everywhere,” Marcial said.
