SUSG SportsComm addresses last year’s feedback

The Silliman University (SU) Gymnasium is set to make its comeback as the venue for the upcoming University Intramurals on Feb. 24 to March 1, following over two years of unavailability.
With the return of facilities to the SU Library, the SU Gym reopened last December 2024, granting access to practices for athletes and sports events.
It was previously unavailable during Intramurals 2024, bringing major sports events to other venues.
In response to student feedback, the SU Student Government Sports and Recreation Committee (SUSG SportsComm) shared a survey through their official Facebook page and was distributed to the college governors.
The survey included the points for improvement students wished to raise with regards to last year’s Intramurals, as well as the proposed date for this year.
“Common concerns, such as delays in game schedules, lack of proper communication, and limited accommodation for non-athlete participants, have been carefully reviewed and addressed,” SUSG SportsComm Chairperson Gerarica Villaflores shared.
Moreover, the committee consulted with University Athletics Director Asst. Prof. Dionesio Piñero II to explore potential adjustments after concerns were raised regarding last year’s game schedules.
Piñero clarified that schedule modifications were limited due to their dependence on tournament managers, noting the women’s football schedule last year as a “point of emphasis.”
Prior to the Intramurals 2024, sports managers agreed on the “football festival” format through a solidarity meeting, which unexpectedly pushed the schedule past the intended time.
Moreover, College of Engineering and Design Governor Nicholas Jamal Tañamor said that the major challenge their college faced in the intramural’s previous iterations is the availability of venues for tryouts since the majority of courts were already occupied.
“The reopening of the SU gym will be beneficial for the students since they do not need to travel very far if they need to practice or play their sports during the intramural season,” he shared.
Meanwhile, College of Business Administration Governor Lia Nicole Bungabong said that the use of the SU Gym would be a first since the pandemic, allowing cheaper and more accessible options for training venues.
In terms of changes in sporting events, Asst. Professor Ricarido Nanggan Jr. proposed pickleball as a substitute for lawn tennis due to the lack of a suitable venue, highlighting their similarities with “unique rules and equipment.”
However, SUSG SportsComm Vice-Chairperson Sam Bajar Dagle confirmed that the rules and formats of other sports will not be changed to keep the guidelines consistent.
