The first graduates of the Silliman University (SU) geology program, Duane Augustine Guevarra and Kirk William Inocian, attended the Professional Regulation Commission and the Geological Society of the Philippines’ mass oath taking ceremony and induction of new professional geologists.
Themed “FORGER: Empowering new geologists to advance geoscience for nation-building,” the event was held last Jan. 21 at the Celebrity Sports Plaza in Quezon City.
Guevarra and Inocian were accompanied by Head of the Physics and Geology Department of Negros Oriental State University Dr. Delilah Ablong.
Ablong attended as the substitute for SU Physics Departments Chairperson Asst. Prof. Zarujo Girasol.
Moreover, Guevarra and Inocian shared how both their college department and the SU Geology Society (SUGS) supported them throughout their journey to become licensed professionals.
On top of providing them with books, reviewers, and mock exams, the two were also given access to rock and mineral samples as well as opportunities for educational excursions.
When asked about their plans as professional geologists, they were set on gaining experiences in the field first before moving onto the next steps in their careers.
“My plan right now as a professional geologist is to further my knowledge through research which will be very helpful in the long run,” Inocian said.
Meanwhile, Guevarra explained that he takes each job opportunity as a stepping stone towards improvement and growth.
Moreover, SUGS President Andrei Ysabel Versario described the event to be “a proud and historic moment for the geology community at [SU].”
She further explained that the pioneering batch had started a legacy for aspiring geologists in the university.
“This milestone proves the strength of the program and inspires current students to aim high in their own journey,” Versario stated in an interview.
Guevarra and Inocian passed the Geologist Licensure Examination on their first attempt last November 2024.
