From Mountain Peaks to Amlan Streets

By Tatiana Onofre

Following the serene first light of dawn that breaks on Christmas morning, the tranquil mountains in Negros Oriental come alive with a quiet yet eager anticipation.

The townsfolk of Amlan busily prepare for a tradition, an unfeigned exchange cutting across the mere act of gift-giving, and the human spirit—a bond that knots individuals from the hard-bitten landscapes to the warmly adorned neighborhoods below.

Each year, on this sacred day, people from the mountains make their way down to Amlan, weaving through the winding streets.

The habitants of the mountain are no strangers to hardship, yet they carry an unwavering spirit, often facing challenges that come with living far from the conveniences of urban life. In their homes, the essence of Christmas is not defined by the abundance of material wealth but rather by love, family, and the warmth shared within tight-knit communities.

Upon reaching the lively streets of Amlan, the visitors are greeted by the gentleness of residents who have passionately dedicated their efforts to preparing thoughtful gift bags—wrapped collections filled with preloved clothing, toys in need of new homes, and essentials such as canned goods.

In this sacred tradition, the act of giving becomes a powerful narrative. Many families in Amlan have prepared thoughtfully, recognizing the struggles faced by their friends from the mountains. In return, the residents are gifted with their gratitude and grinning faces, making all the effort worthwhile.

Caressing and in embrace of one another, the mountains and the valleys converge, and the true essence of Christmas emerges in the city of Amlan— understanding and supporting one another amid the ongoing struggle for betterment.

When night descends over the city, hearts are aglow with the warm and incandescent light of camaraderie.

The mountains and neighborhoods have long been perceived as separate entities, upholding legacies of compassion that continue to inspire generations.

This Christmastime cause serves as a gentle reminder that in sharing our graces, we build bridges that connect paths that reach mountain roads and cross treasures in this season of giving.
