Faculty, students move to Reddith amid portal shutdown

By Dicky Bagongligo

Following increasing students’ complaints, Samukan University (SU) will use the social media platform Reddith as an alternative portal for school-wide transactions and communication.

MySamukan, the portal provided by SU that allows students and faculty to access information and services, crashed due to user traffic during enrollment season and release of grades.

To address the problem, the SU Sige’g Gmail (SUSG) 34th Student Assembly filed a resolution to create the r/SamukanU subreddith to deal with students’ concerns.

Reddith is an online social media forum made up of “reddith” communities focused on specific topics, where users can share and vote on content such as text, links, images, and videos.

Faculty can hold their classes through Reddith Live, a live broadcast feature, and assignments may be submitted via post threads, where grades will be based on the number of upvotes.

Moreover, students must process their tuition and miscellaneous fees by posting proof of payment in the “BayadOrDrop” thread, where posts with more upvotes “might” be noticed by offices.

In the first-ever Reddith post of r/SamukanU, the SUSG announced that Samukanians will temporarily use the application until MySamukan’s repair is completed.

“As part of our core values of being a kool university with kool students, we are ready to adapt to the trend. Samukanians are so skibidi alpha sigma boys and girls,” SUSG President Surina Larpenter wrote.

Meanwhile, SUSG Vice President Lu-kimi Bulalo said that the newly-established platform will also serve as one of its directories to implement its activities.

“We plan to have a freedom wall where everyone can anonymously speak up. Of course, Samukanians never lose, and we will have the most divalicious freedom wall,” Bulalo said.

Other planned activities include an artificial intelligence poster-making competition, online marketplace for classroom slots, and a guessing game for professors’ grading rubric.

r/SamukanU rules, regulations

According to the community rules, posts and threads must be university-related, categorized with their specific “flairs” or tags, and must not be spam or reposts.

Posts and questions must also be added to their respective “megathreads,” such as the “libak zone” thread, “horror stories” thread, and “campus crushes” thread.

SU I Cannot Technology (ICT) Division Chief Chacha MountainDew said that the department will hold training sessions for faculty on the features of Reddith, such as upvoting and commenting.

“Since our students are super advanced with technology, they will be the ones to teach our faculty. This will be required for all teachers,” MountainDew said.

The MySamukan web server is currently under maintenance and is expected to be completed by 2026, according to the SU ICT Division.
