The Bringer of the Bacon

As the Silliman University Intramural Games 2025 kicks off, competitors from different colleges push their limits to pursue the coveted “Home of the Champions” title. Another group, however, pursues to be the provider of the “home” regardless of the “champion” status.

Not all heroes wear capes—some carry ice boxes filled with Pocari Sweat and bags of cheese bread, ensuring athletes stay fueled for battle. Behind every victory, every sprint, and every hard-fought match, are the unsung champions who make it all possible—the Food Committee.

Every day, long before the games begin, the Food Committee is already hard at work. Consisting  of volunteers from different colleges, this team makes sure that food and beverages find their way into athletes’ hands when they need it most.

“Everyone looks at the players and the medals, but not many look at what happens behind the scenes,” shares Rica Regalia, a second-year Mass Communication student and Food Committee head. “We’re here to make sure they have enough energy to compete. It may not be the most glamorous role, but it’s a crucial one,” she added.

From the basketball courts to the fields, rounds are made by the committee, offering hydration and quick energy boosters. They carry coolers packed with electrolyte fluids and loaves of bread, making sure that no athlete goes without refreshment.

The simple yet effective combination of Pocari Sweat and cheese bread has become a staple, providing the needs that maintain energy levels during matches.

Despite the demanding work, the volunteers remain dedicated. “It’s definitely tiring,” Regalia admits. “But we’re happy to help. We’re doing this for our college and to have fun. Knowing that we’re supporting our athletes makes it all worth it.”

After all, it is not always about a net, a court, or even a ball. It takes something more than simple equipment to describe something as a game. It is about determination, quick instincts, and the willingness to push forward even when energy runs out.

The same could be said about those who are working behind the scenes. Though they are not scoring goals or blocking shots, their tireless work and unshakeable dedication supply  every player to perform at their peak.

For most of the athletes, the sight of the Food Committee approaching is more than just a chance to replenish lost fluids, it is a morale boost. “It’s not just about the food,” says Louigie Malolot, a Mass Communication student-athlete. “It’s the way they check on us, remind us to stay hydrated, and even throw in a few words of encouragement. It really makes a difference.”

The committee’s job goes beyond providing food. Over the course of the week-long event, they are in charge of organizing and preparing the meals as well as overseeing the logistics of the food supply. Through their efforts, fatigue and dehydration can be prevented.

As the games progress, the Food Committee continues to do their part. Their work is often overlooked, their names remaining anonymous during awarding ceremonies, but their contribution to the intramurals is undeniable. Without them, athletes would not be able to give their best performances, and the competitive spirit of Silliman University would not shine as brightly.

Not all heroes wear capes. Some carry ice boxes, distribute cheese bread, and quietly ensure that the champions on the field have the strength to win. This year, as the Silliman University Intramurals 2025 crowns its victors, let us also celebrate the ones who made those victories possible—the real champions behind the champions.
