Cheers, banners, and pride stormed the Cimafranca Ballfield as this year’s Silliman University (SU) Intramurals kicked off today, Feb. 23.

This year’s program marks the implementation of changes in the events.

Included in this year’s changes are the removal of Mr. and Ms. Intrams and dancesport, and the inclusion of the cheer-pop dancing competition.

Moreover, students of the PATHFIT4 Indigenous Dance classes performed the Kaamulan as the opening ceremony’s concluding act.

Despite the changes, student-athletes and supporters from various departments remained enthusiastic as they joined the church service and foot parade.

SU President Dr. Betty Cernol-McCann delivered her inspirational message, emphasizing fostering camaraderie and sportsmanship during the intramural games.

“Character is developed not just in the classroom but also in the playing field,” she said.

Following her speech, student council governors and representatives took the stage to honor and raise the flags of their respective departments.

Moreover, a lighting of the intramural flame was held with athletes from SU as its torchbearers.

The torchbearers include frisbee athlete Felipe Diago, roundnet athlete Aileen Kerstin Anlap, and karatedo athlete Hanz Ligutom.

Meanwhile, SU Student Government (SUSG) Sports and Recreation Chairperson Rick Japeth Zosima led the Oath of Amateurism.

“We are amateurs and do pledge ourselves to compete in these intramural games […] in the spirit of true sportsmanship,” the oath included.

Themed “Today’s Treasures, Tomorrow’s Traditions: Celebrating Silliman’s Gifts Through Sports Fellowship Games,” the intramurals will be held until Mar. 1.
